The Anatomy of a Coup: How a CIA front, the NED, laid the Foundations for war in Ukraine

In 2024, we can now look back with a clear view of what led up to the immanently avoidable Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this election year, voters are sending a message to their government: taxpayers refuse any longer to fund destabilization of any form. Everything that’s wrong with US Foreign Policy stems from destabilization of other countries who don’t align with our interests. Manifest Destiny is dead. Taxpayers want the hundreds of billions of their tax dollars we spend on destabilization to be reallocated to infrastructure, to universal healthcare, free pre-K and K16 funding; the end of Citizens United; restoration of reproductive rights of women; an end to the unhoused; and cooperate instead of fighting with China. US world policing is out; enjoin Russia into the EU and NATO, and eliminate ground-based missiles aimed at each other.

But that’s not the world we live in yet. We must begin to ask—why do we have a CIA? Here’s why: the 70-year history of the CIA destabilization is now matter of public record, from CIA earliest coups (Iran, Guatemala, 1953) to Vietnam (1960s) to Nicaragua (1970s, 80s) to Iraq & Afghanistan (2003-present), and many in between. Despite the complexity, the pattern is the same. US State Department, the CIA, via the NED, coordinated to destabilize Ukraine in 2013. Deception, chaos, violence, public disorder, regime change.The blithe arrogance of American Exceptionalism prevails.

The US used Israel as a proxy, funneling to Azerbaijan arms and other military equipment. A proxy method provides the President “plausible deniability” in case things go out of control, a hidden aspect of US supplying Israel with military aid that is never mentioned in US media.This is how 'stealth diplomacy' works. As Joe Biden said in 1990: “If Israel didn’t exist in the Middle East, we’d have to invent one.” This is how genocide happens, how refugees happen, how destabilization happens. US employed a bait-and-switch stealth diplomacy and denial for over 25 years of NATO expansion that exacerbated Russian anxiety about being surrounded by NATO countries with ground based missiles aimed at Russia. Why would Russia allow that to happen? Why didn’t the West heed the warnings that Putin would NOT ALLOW Russia to be surrounded? The US cannot deny: REGIME CHANGE to oust Putin was their stated goal. In a 2015 NYTs op-ed the President of NED explicitly called for regime change in Russia, to set the conditions for the overthrow of Putin. The world of war could easily spin out of control in the Middle East, or in Ukraine--or it could go the other way--worldwide peace. TWO 2-state solutions and unprecedented cooperation would do us give us all hope for the future of our planet. Let's take care of the world's refugees. Is a global solar economy and unprecedented cooperation too much to ask?
